Create an “Address Book” folder and put the Address Book application program, AdBk Prefs, AdBk Help and all list files in it.
Even if you prefer to use the Address Book DA, you will require the Address Book application program to do printing.
The DA and application will normally use the same prefs, help and list files.
System 7.
Don't use the Address Book DA. Make an alias of the Address Book application or your list files and put them in the Apple Menu Items folder.
System 6 with Multifinder.
No need to use the Address Book DA. Use QuicKeys or a program launch utility to provide quick access to the Address Book application.
Other systems.
Install the DA with the Font-DA mover or Suitcase™ and use the DA for entering and editing record. Finding and browsing through records and dialing phone numbers.
Lauch the application to print and export.
All previous Address Book users.
Please remove the old versions of the Address Book DA and application as some who didn’t, called me claiming that the bug fixes did not work. They were still opening the older version.
Version 3.X.X users should use the existing “AdBk Prefs” file.
Please replace the AdBk Help file as there are some changes.
For Address Book version 1 and 2 users.
Address Book version 3 has new record format and the fields are will hold more characters.
The net result is that the record size has increased from 440 bytes to 614 bytes. As the list is memory resident, Address Book will require more memory to run. In addition, the application is much larger requiring even more memory.
Previously, if you had 250 records, 300K of memory would suffice for the application or DA. With the new application, 450K will be required. The new DA has less features than the application and uses about 100K less. Leaving the print and export capability out of the DA was done to keep it small and allow those with 1Meg Macs to use it.
If you are using System 6 and run MultiFinder then I suggest that you use the Address Book application and use QuicKeys™ or similar program to launch it.
If you are using System 7 then use the Address Book application and use QuicKeys™ or similar program to launch it. You can create an alias of the application or of the list file(s) and put it (them) in the apple menu folder.
Address Book v3 will open your version 1 or version 2 list file and convert it to the new format.
The DA no longer requires the Addr_list file to be in the system folder nor has it to be named "Addr_list".
Shareware....
If you are using Address Book and have not registered , please send $30 U.S. shareware fee plus $5 for each additional computer using Address Book at the same site. When you do, you will receive the latest version and a 50 page instruction book.
If you have previously paid the version 1.x $10 or the version 2.x $20 shareware fee then please make up the difference.
